Achilles International NZ
Our Vision
To give people with disabilities an opportunity to participate in mainstream events. The goal of the HOPE and POSSIBILITY is to be inclusive, where able bodied and disabled athletes participate together.
Our Mission
Achilles is a worldwide organisation whose mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics, promote personal achievement, enhance self-esteem and lower barriers.
Join sports starts Chris Martin and Frank Bumce plus TV3s Hamish McKay at this fundraising event.
Purpose of the Event:
We are organising and hosting a corporate golf day and charity auction event to raise $20,000 to setup a South Island branch of Achilles New Zealand. This will be based in Christchurch and run entirely by
volunteers. The funds raised from the charity golf event will be used to provide the required funds to pay for resources, equipment and athlete support for the next 12 months and beyond as follows:
1) Provide financial assistance and resources for a team of 3 disabled athletes (plus compulsory support crew) from the South Island to compete in the New York Marathon in November 2012.
- Brian Coker (Christchurch): Double above-the-knee leg amputee from injuries sustained from the collapse of the PGC Building in the Feb 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Brian will compete in the handcycle
category.
- Rob Martin (Christchurch): Leg amputee. Rob will compete in the hand cycle category.
- Drew McLean (Dunedin): Paralysed right arm and shoulder brachial plexus.
A further five disabled athletes from the North Island will also represent Achilles NZ at the New York Marathon:
- stroke
- blind
- cancer
- quadriplegic
2) Setup an Achilles Kids program within a pilot school in Christchurch. The funding provides classroom
teacher aides and resources for each school to run this year-long program with their intellectually and
physically disabled children during regular P.E. classes. Each child completes a 42.2km 'virtual' marathon
during the year and culminates with a T-shirt and medal when they finish.
3) Organise the inaugural South Island "Hope & Possibility 5km Run, Walk or Roll" event in December 2012. This is our flagship event at the end of the year, whereby able bodied and disabled people participate sideby-
side to complete their 5km journey. This will likely be held in Hagley Park Christchurch and is also the culmination of
the Achilles Kids program each year.
